Venugopalaswamy temple

This ancient temple dedicated to Lord Krishna popularly known as Sri Venugopala Swamy was built by the efforts of the residents of Malleswaram locality. Eminent personalities such as Shetlur Venkataranga Iyengar, Prof. M T Narayan Iyengar, R Bahadur Narasimhacharya, M T Narasimha Iyengar and Vidwan A Anandalvar Swamy approached the Mysore Maharani for the kingdom’s help in establishing a temple for Lord Vishnu. The Maharani readily agreed to do so by donating a sum of 3,750 Varahas (the then currency of Mysore kingdom) and the Deity for the temple. The remaining amount for constructing the temple i.e. 11,794 Varahas was contributed by the residents of Malleswaram.

Local bazaar

We walk to the local market. The market is a riot of colors as the street vendors peddle flowers, vegetables, fruits, clothes, household items, trinkets, handicrafts, utensils.

Kadu Malleswara temple

It is believed that Malleswaram actually derives its name from the temple called Kadu Malleshwara located here. Lord Shiva is the principal deity worshiped as Mallikarjun. There is a second portion of this temple too, in front of the temple itself. This temple is believed to be existing since 17th century and consecrated by the great Chatrapati Shivaji , the Maratha emperor’s brother Venkoji . It follows the dravidian style of construction

Nandi temple

Called Sri Dakshinamukha Nandi Tirtha Kalyani Kshetra this ancient temple is exceptionally beautiful in its architecture and especially for its stepped pond located right within the temple structure. A unique aspect of this temple is the idol of Lord Nandi from whose mouth emerges a continuous stream of water falling down onto the Shivalingam below. The source of this water is yet unknown. Locals believe this temple to be as 7,000 years old! The temple was recently rediscovered during an excavation in the Malleswaram area after having been buried in mud for several years.
